This history timeline follows the life of Milton W Cline, from his birth in Whitehall, New York in 1827 until his death in 1911, in Cimarron, Colorado. The phenomenal life of the man intersected all aspects of the great migration of civilization into the west. Cline worked as a whaler, rail crews and scout for the railroads, civil war, as a Captain in the Union Army of Potomac-Scout with the Bureau of Military Information, miner, town discoverer and rancher. After the war his discovery of gold and silver in the area of Ouray led to rapid growth and getting the town named and platted. In 1878 onto Cimarron, Colorado, founded by him and the expansion of stage lines and the DR&G railroad.
Cline interacts with US. politics, pre and post civil war, Lincoln, mining and ranching, as well as in depth with the Ute Indians in Colorado. Cline’s life crossed many aspects of life starting with whaling in the Indian Ocean. He worked on the Erie railroad from New York, across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. He enlisted in the Northern Army in Indiana in the civil war and was made a Captain in the Scouts of the Bureau of Information in the Union Army of the Potomac, under General Hooker and Colonel Sharpe. After the war he continued with railroad construction on the transcontinental route in 1868-69 and then went onto discovery of silver in gold in the San Juan mountains of Colorado. Cline first mines were in the Town of Ouray which he got named and platted. After warring factions in the town drove him out he settled into ranching with land from the Ute Chief Ouray and named the area and little town he created for a stage stop then a railroad depot, Cimarron. Cline was a friend and respected by Chief Ouray, and worked to protect them even to the end with the US Government. Cline was one of the rescuers sent to rescue the Meeker children and fought for the Utes rights as much as he could under ridicule of most of the citizenry. Included besides the life and deeds of Milton W. Cline, his wife Elizabeth and children, is the history of the railroads , westward expansion, politics of a nation, founding of mining towns and correlation of people and happenings of the times.
